Cat is possessive of our baby's room?
Our cat will take any opportunity to sneak into our baby's room and rub her face all over everything... the crib, door, dresser, rocker, car seat, diaper bag. EVERYTHING! (I have read that is a way of "tagging" things as theirs?) Once she's sneaks in you have to chase her out but in every other room you say "come on Kali" and she'll follow you out. We used to leave the room open to roam but we found her sleeping in the crib and obviously we needed to break her of the habit. Is it possible that my cat thinks that this 'special' room and all the things in it are for her? Is there a way to brace her for all of this before baby arrives?
Also, we have a swing, bouncy seat, toys and a couple blankets out and ready in the living room. She did her little face rubbing thing on those for about a week and now she could care less. What is it about this room?
Cats are very curious and will always want to investigate what lays behind the other side of a closed door. They rely very heavily on their sense of smell and all the items that you've brought into the home in readiness for your baby smell unfamiliar to her, which is why she's scent marking them as part of her territory. Once she's done this a few times, the novelty should soon wear off, especially if you are able to leave the nursery door open. You might want to consider investing in a crib net to prevent her from attempting to sleep there.
