If you are thinking about going on holiday this year you may want to consider whether or not you would like some personalized luggage tags or ‘bag tags’ as our friends across the pond call them.

Traditionally, luggage tags or tickets have been utilized by airline companies in order to route luggage onto its final destination. The Warsaw Convention signed originally in 1929 is responsible for keeping airlines in check when in comes to the responsibility of a passenger’s baggage. When flying, your airline typically checks in your luggage and hands you a luggage ticket stub to assist in the identifying of bags at ‘baggage claim’. Luggage tags are therefore proof that a piece of luggage is yours should any doubt arise especially should it have gone astray.

Where did the concept of luggage tags come about? In 1882 the first patent for the idea of a ‘separable coupon ticket’ was issued to a Mr J Lyons of New Brunswick. Upon the ticket the issuing station and destination along with a reference number were printed (upon the stub tied to the luggage) and the ticket (issued to the passenger).

Today barcodes are used to keep the passenger’s baggage from straying from the passenger. Once checked in bags are routed through their bar codes through an automated sorting system. Automated bar code readers in the form of laser scanners are pretty much used in every main airport around the world today.

Why not add to the security of your checked in luggage with your own personalized luggage tags? Thanks to luggage tags customized by yourself, you don’t need to worry about your bag being picked up by someone else or losing your baggage thanks to the details included on the tag. You can customize the tag and design the image yourself and simply include your name and destination address so that if you find yourself on holiday without your bag, your bag will get back to you. If you find you have to travel a lot for business, why not design your own custom luggage tags with your company logo?

Wherever you fly to the carrier is liable for your luggage and should be doing all they can to ensure your luggage doesn’t go astray while you travel with them. Sadly, accidents do happen and bags do go astray (many will recall when Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 5 opened in 2008 when within a space of only 10 days, 42,000 bags failed to follow their owners). Bags with personalized luggage tags made identification that bit easier!
